As a photographer, I’ve heard this sentence so many times before a shoot – and maybe you also believe that you’re “not photogenic.”
The reason for such thoughts usually lies in the fact that our self-image is distorted, and we therefore feel uncomfortable as soon as a camera appears. The fact is: every person can look great in photos.
We often see ourselves very differently from how others perceive us. Mirrors distort our appearance through unflattering light, a frontal (and thus less flattering) perspective, reversal, and awkward poses.
Unsuccessful snapshots also shape our thinking: instead of saying “that photo was poorly taken,” we look for the fault in our appearance. These experiences make us see ourselves differently from how we truly are – and that shapes us. In front of the camera, we become tense, and that discomfort shows in our facial expression and body language in the photos. Then we see the picture and feel confirmed in our expectation. A vicious circle.
In addition, we tend to focus on our supposed flaws. We are our own harshest critics and often forget how many beautiful sides we have. Others, however, see you as a whole and are drawn to your beautiful features. No one pays as much attention to details as you do. No one else wonders what might be “different” about you.
So forget about what it would be like if you had longer or shorter hair, weighed 5 kilos more or less, and so on. You are you, and that’s exactly right. That’s why you don’t need to compare yourself to others – which, of course, isn’t easy in times of social media. Always remember: beauty is not universal but individual. What looks great to one person might not be attractive to another.
A professional photoshoot gives you your real self: no unflattering poses. No bad light. No awkward angles. No snapshots. And most importantly: the shoot only starts when you feel comfortable. You will see yourself through someone else’s eyes, discover new sides of yourself, and stop doubting yourself. For me as a photographer, it’s one of the most beautiful moments to see the effect my photos can have.
